fatigue

68. Why am I tired all the time? Causes of Fatigue

Do you ever feel tired without any reason? The thing is, fatigue and tiredness are never a good sign. They mean that your body is trying to tell you that something is wrong and needs fixing. Quite a few times it is usually overlooked, however, your weight might be a determining factor – especially if after seeing a doctor you’re still feeling drained.

What is Happening?

The relation between feeling fatigued and having enough sleep, or nutrition, or managing daily stress seems baffling to most. But having enough of these factors in your life does not prevent you from feeling fatigued. The relation energy has with your weight is often ignored, yet it is crucial for your mental and physical health.

There are several sciences that support the relation between energy and weight. For instance, the paper published in the journal Obesity Reports makes a case that weight management as little as a few pounds lost leads to a more positive mood and energy. Another great example would be research in Sleep Medicine, which indicates that people with specific sleep apnea experience more energy along with a better quality of sleep after losing weight. So, after restoring metabolic balance and improving the quality of sleep, with energy levels rising, daily activities are not the most difficult thing in the world to do anymore.

Is It Possible That Weight Gain Is Impacting Your Energy Levels?

Have you ever had the chance to reflect on the possibility that being overweight might be causing exhaustion? There is a relationship between energy levels and carrying excess weight that goes beyond just stress on the body, too.

Consider the following as possible explanations:

Nutritional Deficiency:

Insufficient dietary consumption or absorption of fundamental vitamins such as iron, vitamin D or B12 may cause the individual’s energy levels to be diminished.

Physical Strain:

With weight being a little excessive than an acceptable range, simple day to day tasks require more effort than usual. Gardening, walking and even reading becomes tiresome, which in turn results in excessive energy withdrawals causing fatigue.

Inflammation:

There are several factors which cause inflammation which in turn impacts the resources allocated to metabolize nutritional resources into energy impacting fatigue levels. Obesity is one of those factors.

Sleep Disruption:

Conditions, such as sleep apnea, that are frequently found in people who are overweight, also make it difficult for such individuals to sleep. This condition roughly aggravated their levels of fatigue.

Hormonal Imbalances:

Insulin and cortisol are affective hormones that are altered during overweight condition resulting in fatigue and lack of self-drive.

Mental Health:

Apart from weight associated fatigue, one might also experience low mood or stress that can affect the total fatigue levels.

Chronic Illness:

Fatigue may also be affiliated with some chronic medical illnesses such as diabetes, hypothyroid, cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and even chronic autoimmune disorders.

Medications:

As a side effect some medications like antihistamines, sedatives and certain antidepressants have fatigue and drowsiness as side effects.

Dehydration:

If the volume of blood is reduced on account of hydration, it can cause the heart to exert more and tire the body out.

Overtraining or Lack of Physical Activity:

Extreme lethargy can also be experience when people exercise too much or remain inactive for too long.

Poor Diet:

An increased intake of refined carbs, sugar and processed foods can also trigger energy slumps and fatigue.

Alcohol or Substance Use

There is a variety of drugs and excessive caffeine which if taken excessively can alter sleep and energy levels.

Stress or Burnout

Prolonged periods of stress can cause the brain to shut down, leaving the body to function by using any remaining energy.
